Autumn in the Zillertal

Almabtrieb in Mayrhofen/Zillertal

When the highest mountains of the Alps begin to hide their summits ever more frequently beneath a cloak of white, the deep forests put on an impressive display of color and the clear mountain air reveals breathtaking views of the surrounding  alpine giants, then we can rest assured that, even in the farthest corner of the Ziller Valley, the "gold" of autumn has well and truly arrived - for many outdoor enthusiasts, this is the most beautiful time of year.

Almabtrieb is a living tradition lovingly nurtured by the people of the Zillertal - and for their guests, especially, this is a particularly colorful spectacle: With the summer grazing season drawing to a close, the cows are festively adorned with flowers, ribbons, boards displaying goodwill messages and large cow bells, then driven from the high pastures back to their winter barns in the valley bottom.  And everyone comes to watch.

The animals come from the Zillergrund, the Stilluptal, Ginzling and the Tuxertal, making their way "home" to Mayrhofen. The so-called "Moarkuh" leads this decorative parade, followed in order by cows, calves, steers, young oxen and then small livestock such as sheep and goats.

During our autumn festivals, the bounty of culinary enjoyment is overflowing - a colorful selection of Zillertal specialties is offered to guests and locals alike.
